Elena and I spent a week in New Orleans recently. No, it wasn’t exactly a vacation — we went with a volunteer group from our church and did a project to help some of the families still struggling after the damage of Katrina. What a lot of us up here don’t realize is that there is a lot of NOLA that’s still really hurting. Folks begin to feel forgotten down there. Anyway, it was hard work putting up sheetrock and painting for the 3 families we helped, but we did have some time for fun after hours.
Here are some images of a parade we saw. Getting ready for Mardi Gras is a really big deal, and these parades on the weekend are the lead-up to the big event.
The groups that put on these floats are called Krewes, something like a club you belong to. The members each spend over a thousand dollars a year on “throws,” the beads they toss to the crowds.
