Last month I attended a one-week session at the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops. The class was in “Classic Portraiture” and was taught by Norman Mauskopf and Kurt Markus. The focus of the class was entirely different from the type of work I usually do, and it was like a creative bump on the head – much better than spending a week refining stuff I already know!
The two instructors are dyed-in-the-wool BW film photographers. Though it wasn’t required, I spent the week shooting (digital) black-and-white and came to have a new interest and respect for the medium — so much that on my return I pulled out my vintage Nikon F and bought a few rolls of Tri-X.
