I recently attended an event at Boston University where a number of Boston chefs paid tribute to Julia Child’s 100th birthday. Each prepared a single dish that was either inspired or influenced in some way by Julia, and the courses were brought out, over ten in all, to a room full of 80 guests. Naturally, the most fun was in the kitchen, where I got to watch as they did their thing, or just mingled and caught up with each other.
On the far left is Jacques Pepin, long time friend and collaborator with Julia. The chef standing next to him is Jean-Claude Szurdak. He is Jacques’ closest friend who has cooked with him since they were in the French navy. On the right is Raymond Ost from Sandrine’s Restaurant, and his assistant. The gentleman at the door is Garrett Harker from Eastern Standard and Island Creek Oyster Bar.
Thank you to Rebecca Alssid, director of the Gastronomy Degree Program at Boston University, for hosting this event!
